Common A/C Repair Questions

Why is my car A/C blowing warm air?

The most common causes are: (1) Low refrigerant due to a leak in the system, (2) A failed A/C compressor that's not engaging, (3) A clogged or failed expansion valve / orifice tube, (4) An electrical issue with the compressor clutch or pressure switches. Diagnosis usually requires checking refrigerant pressures and testing the compressor electrically. If your compressor is failing, we stock replacement units from FOUR SEASONS, UAC, and Sanden in most popular applications.

How do I know if my A/C compressor is bad?

Common symptoms of a failing A/C compressor include: (1) Loud noises like grinding, squealing, or rattling when A/C is on, (2) A/C blowing warm air despite proper refrigerant levels, (3) Compressor clutch not engaging (won't kick on), (4) Visible refrigerant leaks around the compressor, (5) Cabin temperature not consistent — fluctuating between cold and warm. If you experience these symptoms, your compressor likely needs replacement.

Can I replace my A/C compressor myself?

A/C compressor replacement is intermediate-level DIY work. You'll need recovery and recharge equipment for the refrigerant, a vacuum pump to evacuate the system, manifold gauges to check pressures, and basic hand tools. We recommend recovering refrigerant at a shop before starting (releasing R134a is illegal under EPA regulations). When replacing the compressor, also replace the receiver-drier or accumulator and orifice tube, plus flushing the lines to remove debris.

Should I replace condenser when replacing compressor?

It's strongly recommended to replace the condenser when replacing a failed compressor, especially if the old compressor failed catastrophically. When a compressor fails internally, metal debris circulates through the entire A/C system and lodges in the condenser. Even with thorough flushing, debris can remain and damage your new compressor within months. Replacing the condenser eliminates this risk and ensures reliable A/C operation.

What's the difference between R134a and R1234yf refrigerant?

R134a was the standard refrigerant from 1995 through approximately 2014-2017 depending on manufacturer. It's still readily available. R1234yf is the current refrigerant standard, used in most vehicles 2015 and newer. It has lower global warming potential than R134a but is significantly more expensive. Make sure to use the correct refrigerant for your vehicle — they are NOT interchangeable.

Do I need to evacuate the A/C system before installing new parts?

Yes, absolutely. Any time the A/C system is opened to the atmosphere (compressor replacement, line replacement, etc.), the system must be evacuated with a vacuum pump for at least 30 minutes before recharging. This removes air and moisture from the system. Moisture in an A/C system causes acid formation, internal corrosion, and premature compressor failure. Skipping this step is the #1 reason replacement compressors fail prematurely.

How long do A/C compressors last?

A properly-maintained A/C compressor typically lasts 8-15 years or 100,000-150,000 miles. Lifespan depends on how often you use the A/C system, whether it's been kept properly charged with refrigerant, whether annual service has been performed, and the climate where the vehicle operates. To maximize compressor life, run your A/C for at least 10 minutes weekly even in winter to keep seals lubricated.
