- Description: PIERBURG is the European market leader in the water pump sector.
The mechanical water pumps produced by KSPG AG are characterized by outstanding quality, function, and high durability. Each year around 6 million water pumps and around 8 million electrical coolant pumps for motor vehicles and utility vehicles are produced at the production sites in Germany, France, Italy, Brazil, and the USA.
At BMW, PIERBURG was the first global series-production supplier for electrical coolant pumps. Requirement-based cooling of the engine enables the fuel consumption to be reduced by around two to three percent, which also reduces emissions and friction. The main application areas are the indirect charge air cooling of supercharged combustion engines. Even in the drive concepts of hybrid and electric vehicles, the pumps are used for a variety of cooling functions such as the cooling of batteries, DC/DC converters, and power electronics.
Since 1996, Pierburg has held a leading market position with its electronic water circulating pumps. Water circulating pumps are fitted with an electric motor and mounted decentrally on the engine. They are used in situations where cooling and heating functions need to be implemented independently of the engine coolant circuit, for example the heating support, the residual heat extraction, and in pre-heating systems.
Technical information
- Heat is produced through combustion in the engine. The cooling liquid absorbs the heat from the engine block and cylinder head and releases this into the ambient air via the radiator. The water pump circulates the cooling liquid in the closed cooling system. Once optimum temperatures have been achieved, the engine is provided with operating conditions that have a high level of efficiency, complete combustion, and reduced emissions values. Mechanical water pumps are driven by either V-belts, flat belts, or toothed belts depending on the installation location on the vehicle – with a fixed connection to the engine speed. The pumps are designed to ensure sufficient cooling, even at low engine speeds with a high load and high ambient temperatures. This means that they are overdesigned for normal operation (at a higher engine speed and low load).
- The use of the electrical coolant pump in combination with modern thermal management of the combustion engine has measurable advantages. The requirement-based cooling results in fuel saving (approx. 3%) and a corresponding reduction of exhaust emissions, particularly during the cold start phase. Furthermore, improved air conditioning means that it is possible to achieve a greater level of comfort in the passenger compartment. Electrical water circulating pumps and coolant pumps are available in power outputs of 15 W to 400 W.
Diagnostic information
- Mechanical water pumps: Typical damage includes: faulty bearings, noise resulting from a faulty bearing, loose impellers, and leakages. The pumps are sealed using a so-called sliding ring seal. Due to their special design, sliding ring seals are never completely watertight. A small amount of water always escapes in between the sliding surfaces of the sealing material onto the pressure-less side of the seal and evaporates there. Traces of condensation without a noticeable loss of coolant are an ordinary phenomenon in coolant pumps. The water that escapes from a new pump in the form of a few drops is lost in the initial hours of operation. Sliding ring seals need some time to wear in.
- Electrical coolant pumps CWA 50 – CWA 400: Electrical coolant pumps have various integrated protective mechanisms. If one of these mechanisms is activated, for example due to overvoltage, dry running or if the pump becomes jammed, a diagnostic trouble code can be stored in the vehicle control unit. Since a number of different sensors and actuators may influence the malfunctions in controlled pumps, we recommend that you consult the vehicle-specific test instructions of the vehicle manufacturer.
- General cooling system: In order to prevent corrosion damage and cavitation in the cooling system, it is absolutely necessary that the anti-freeze mixture prescribed by the vehicle manufacturer be used in the specified mixing ratio. - Condition: New
- Sale Price: $542.01
