From the shop: on many modern engines, the vacuum pump is what gives you brake assist, so a hard brake pedal or a vacuum code is not something to ignore. Check the vacuum lines and check valves before you replace the pump. On EGR and secondary air valves, carbon and moisture are the usual enemies. Clean the passages and check the vacuum or electrical control before you condemn the valve. An electric water pump is controlled by the engine computer; after you install one, fill and bleed the cooling system exactly as the manufacturer says, often with a scan tool.
