From the shop: a humming or growling noise that changes with speed, and gets louder when you turn one way, often points to a worn wheel bearing. Check for play with the wheel off the ground before you order. On tapered bearings, replace the cone and the cup together and pack the bearing with the right grease. Always install a new seal when the bearing comes out; a cheap seal that leaks will ruin an expensive bearing. On hub units, clean the knuckle mating surface, torque the axle nut to spec with the vehicle on the ground and never use an impact gun to seat a bearing.
