Timing belts keep the camshaft and crankshaft in time; serpentine belts drive the alternator, water pump, power steering and A/C compressor on many engines.

From the shop: a timing belt is a part you change on schedule, not when it breaks. On an interference engine, a broken timing belt can bend valves and turn a belt job into an engine job. When the timing belt comes off, inspect or replace the tensioner, idler pulleys and, on many engines, the water pump at the same time, because the labor is the same. On serpentine belts, check the tensioner and pulleys for noise and wobble; a worn tensioner will eat a new belt. Cracks, glazing, squeal and chirping are signs it is time.
